Book bags

I have always thought it would be good to have a book bag. What I mean is a bag that fits snugly and protects your book so you can throw it in your bag when you go out for the day or away for the weekend. I also have lots of gorgeous pieces of fabric that are too small to make garments out of but perfect for small projects. Last weekend I made a couple of different sized book bags. I’m thinking three sizes in all would cover most book sizes, and the ‘box’ bottom and adjustable closures allows for different thicknesses.

The first one I made was out of some Japanese fabric I bought from the Asia Gallery. I lined it in unbleached calico and added a simple ribbon tie. But what about protecting your book from water damage? I often save small, study plastic bags to put a book in when I travel, so what about lining the book bag in plastic? For the second, bigger bag I cut some plastic to size and sandwiched it between the outer and the lining. It’s a bit “rustly” but works pretty well and definitely hasn’t affected the look of the bag. The second larger one’s made from some Ikea fabric and lined in black calico.

Next step is to make some more personalised bags featuring embroidery or applique on the front. I think they will make good gifts, especially with a book inside.
